Local sales of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. fell but exports cushioned the blow in August 2025, as buyers awaited the upcoming GST reforms before buying a car.
India’s largest carmaker by sales shipped to dealerships fell 8.2% year-on-year to 131,278 units last month even as exports rose 40.51% to 36,538 units, according to an exchange filing on Monday.
Total sales of Royal Enfield motorcycles rose by more than 50% in August 2025 as the Madras Original demand from both local and global markets.
The Classic maker shipped to dealerships 1,02,876 motorcycles last month, as against 65,623 units in the year-ago period—clocking 57% growth year-on-year, according to an exchange filing on Monday. Exports surged 39% to 11,126 units.
Total sales of TVS Motor Co. Ltd. rose to the highest in August 2025, as demand for its two-wheelers jumped by a third.
The Chennai-based automaker shipped to dealerships 5,09,536 units last month, as against 3,91,588 units in the year-ago period, clocking a growth of 30.12% year-on-year, according to an exchange filing on Monday. This was the first time that the company has sold more than five lakh units in a month.
Mahindra Auto’s SUV sales fell in August 2025 even as its CV and exports held up growth, according to company data.
SUV sales of the market leader by revenue fell 9% year-on-year to 39,399 units even as demand for light commercial vehicles and three-wheelers grew 13% to 10,527 units, according to an exchange filing on Monday. Total exports surged 16% to 3,548 units.
Mahindra attributed the decline in SUV sales to customers in wait-and-watch mode ahead of upcoming GST reforms.
“August witnessed relatively robust demand in the SUV segment amidst anticipated GST rate changes,” Nalinikanth Gollangunta, chief executive officer of Mahindra Auto, said in a statement.
“With the final GST announcement approaching, we consciously decided to bring down the wholesale billing to minimize the stock being carried by our dealers. We look forward to the GST rationalization, which would be a demand driver through the festive season.”
Mahindra Auto’s total sales stood at 75,901 vehicles last month.
The Gujarat-based three-wheeler maker shipped 3,026 units last month, as against 2,834 units in the year-ago period—a 6.77% growth year-on-year, according to an exchange filing on Monday.
Local sales, however, fell 4.83% over the year-ago period to 2,601 units even as exports jumped more than four times to 425 units versus 101 units last August.
Total sales of JSW MG Motor Pvt. Ltd. rose more than 50% last month on steady demand for its electric cars.
The joint venture of India’s JSW Group and China’s SAIC Motor Co. Ltd. shipped to dealerships 6,578 units last month, as against 4,323 units in the year-ago period, according to a statement on Monday.
The company claimed its retail sales—calculated as vehicle registrations on the government’s VAHAN website—rose to the highest last month as demand for the MG Windsor and MG Comet rose 5% and 21%, respectively.
The Chennai-based automaker shipped to dealerships 13,622 units last month, as against 13,347 units in the year-ago period—a growth of 2% year-on-year, according to an exchange filing on Monday. Exports jumped nearly 70% to 1,617 units.
In all, the company sold 15,239 commercial vehicles in August, as against 14,463 units in the year-ago period—a growth of 5% year-on-year.
Ather Energy Ltd. has clocked its highest ever monthly retail sales in August 2025, as the Bengaluru-based EV maker continues to expand its footprint pan-India.
A total of 17,856 Ather Energy scooters were registered last month, as against 11,046 units in the year-ago period, according to data sourced from the govt’s VAHAN website. That’s higher than 17,430 units sold in March 2024—the final month of FAME-II subsidy.
Tractor sales of Escorts Kubota Ltd. grew by more than a fourth in August 2025 as a roaring monsoon boosted demand.
The company sold 7,902 tractors last month, as against 6,243 units in the year-ago period—a growth of 26.6% year-on-year, according to an exchange filing on Monday. Exports rose 35.5% to 554 units.
“During August, the tractor industry sustained growth momentum supported with favorable rural conditions, such as timely and widespread monsoon rains, strong water reservoir levels coupled with an early start of the festive season this year,” the company stated in the exchange filing.
“With kharif sowing exceeding last year’s acreage and possibility of a timely GST rate reduction on tractors and farm machinery before the start of peak festive season, agricultural equipment industry sentiments remain robust and demand is expected to further improve in the coming months.”
Total sales of Bajaj Auto Ltd. rose 5% year-on-year to 4,17,616 units in August 2025, but much of the growth came from its three-wheeler business.
The domestic two-wheeler sales of the Pulsar maker fell 12% year-on-year to 1,84,109 units last month, even as exports rose 25% to 1,57,778 units, as per an exchange filing. The company’s overall two-wheeler business grew 2% to 3,41,887 units.
The three-wheeler business performed better. While domestic volumes grew 7% to 48,289 units, exports surged 58% to 27,440 units. In all, Bajaj Auto shipped to dealerships 75,729 autorickshaws last month for a 21% growth year-on-year.
